Access Cavity & Pulp Anatomy
Objectives of Access
Straight-line access to canal orifices, conservation of tooth structure, complete unroofing of the pulp chamber, and removal of all pulp horns.
Access Outlines
- Maxillary molar — triangular/rhomboidal (MB, DB, palatal canals; the MB2 canal is very common, often >50-90%).
- Mandibular molar — trapezoidal (mesial two + distal canals; commonly 3-4 canals).
- Anteriors — triangular (incisors) or oval; mandibular incisors often have 2 canals.
Canal Configurations
Vertucci's classification describes canal patterns. Knowing the most common canal numbers per tooth is high-yield.
Exam Tips ⭐
Maxillary molar = triangular access + MB2; mandibular molar = trapezoidal; mandibular incisors often 2 canals.
