Development of Face, Palate & Teeth
Facial Development
The face forms from five prominences: the frontonasal, paired maxillary, and paired mandibular processes. Cleft lip results from failure of fusion of the maxillary and medial nasal processes; cleft palate from failure of palatal shelf fusion.
Tooth Development (Odontogenesis)
From the dental lamina, teeth pass through bud → cap → bell stages. Enamel organ + dental papilla + dental follicle form the tooth germ. Hertwig's epithelial root sheath (HERS) directs root formation.
Exam Tips ⭐
Cleft lip = maxillary + medial nasal fusion failure; tooth stages = bud → cap → bell; HERS = root formation.
