Surgical Management of Cysts
Techniques
- Enucleation — complete removal of the cyst with its lining; the treatment of choice for most small/moderate cysts.
- Marsupialization (decompression) — creating a window to relieve pressure and let a large cyst shrink, especially near vital structures (IAN, antrum) or unerupted teeth.
- Enucleation with adjunctive therapy — peripheral ostectomy and Carnoy's solution (chemical cauterisation) for aggressive lesions like the OKC to reduce recurrence.
Choice of Technique
Depends on size, location, proximity to vital structures, and the histologic aggressiveness of the lesion.
Exam Tips ⭐
Enucleation = complete removal; marsupialization = large cysts near vital structures; Carnoy's solution = OKC adjunct.
