⭐ High-Yield Facts for Exam

  • Based on first permanent molar relationship.
  • Class II div 1 = proclined upper incisors.
  • Class II div 2 = retroclined upper centrals + deep bite.
  • Class III = mandibular molar mesial (prognathic).
  • Purely dental/AP — complemented by cephalometrics.

Angle's Classification of Malocclusion

Angle's system is based on the anteroposterior relationship of the maxillary first permanent molar to the mandibular first permanent molar.

  • Class I — Mesiobuccal cusp of the maxillary first molar occludes in the buccal groove of the mandibular first molar (normal molar relation); malocclusion is due to crowding/spacing/rotations.
  • Class II — Mandibular molar is distal to normal (maxillary molar relatively forward). Division 1 = proclined upper incisors (increased overjet). Division 2 = retroclined upper central incisors with deep bite.
  • Class III — Mandibular molar is mesial to normal (prognathic mandible / anterior crossbite).

Limitations

Purely dental and anteroposterior; ignores vertical/transverse problems and skeletal vs dental distinction — hence cephalometrics complements it.

Exam Tips ⭐

Key landmark = maxillary first molar to mandibular first molar. Class II div 1 = proclined; div 2 = retroclined uppers.

📝 Practice MCQs — Angle's Classification & Malocclusion

Q1. Angle's classification is based on the relationship of the:
A. Canines
B. Incisors
C. First permanent molars
D. Second molars
Show Answer
✅ Answer: C
It uses the maxillary-to-mandibular first permanent molar relationship.
Q2. Class II Division 2 is characterised by:
A. Proclined upper incisors
B. Retroclined upper central incisors
C. Anterior crossbite
D. Normal molars
Show Answer
✅ Answer: B
Division 2 shows retroclined upper centrals with deep bite.
Q3. In Angle's Class III, the mandibular first molar is:
A. Distal to normal
B. Mesial to normal
C. In normal position
D. Rotated
Show Answer
✅ Answer: B
The lower molar is mesial to normal (prognathic tendency).
Q4. A limitation of Angle's classification is that it:
A. Uses canines
B. Ignores vertical/transverse and skeletal components
C. Is too complex
D. Needs radiographs
Show Answer
✅ Answer: B
It is purely AP and dental, ignoring other planes and skeletal basis.
